George Streetfest on Main
The first Friday of every month, in the evening
Historic Downtown, Main Street, St. George
The Night Main Street Closes
On the first Friday of the month, St. George closes Main Street through the historic core and turns it into an open-air music and art festival. There is a free live concert, a long run of artists and makers, a food-truck village, a kids' zone, and a night market. It costs nothing to walk into.
The closure runs the block of Main between Tabernacle Street and St. George Boulevard, in the evening. That is the oldest and most walkable part of the city, and closing it to cars is the whole point — for one night a month the town has a downtown in the way older cities have one permanently.
How It Came About
Streetfest is not a pioneer-era tradition, which surprises people. It was created by Emceesquare Media and approved by the St. George City Council as a new monthly event, running from June 2015. In a decade it went from an untested idea to the most dependable social date on the local calendar.
That origin explains its character. It was designed as a recurring venue rather than an annual celebration of anything in particular, so there is no parade, no pageant, and no heritage program — just a street, a stage, and vendors, on a schedule reliable enough to plan around.
What Is Actually There
The stage anchors one end and the music is free and live. The vendor run is the bulk of it: local artists, makers, and crafters at tables down the closed street, alongside food trucks and a night market. There is a kids' zone, which makes it workable for families earlier in the evening before the crowd thickens.
The makers are genuinely local, which is the practical argument for going if you want to take something regional home. It is a better place to find that than the souvenir shelves.
Practical Notes
Park off the route. Main Street itself closes and the surrounding blocks fill, so plan on a short walk in rather than a space at the edge of the festival.
Go later in summer, earlier in winter. From June into September the valley is too hot for a street festival until the sun is properly down, and the event is built around that. Winter first Fridays are cool enough to want a jacket.
It is not the only first Friday event. The First Friday Market at Kayenta runs the same evening twenty minutes west in Ivins, and it is a quieter, smaller alternative if a closed street full of people is not what you want.
Who It Suits
Almost anyone, which is unusual. Families work best early in the evening; the concert and the market carry it later. For visitors it is the single easiest way to see what St. George is like as a community rather than as a base camp for national parks — our guide to timing a visit around Streetfest covers that case in more detail. Because it recurs monthly rather than annually, it is also the rare local event you do not have to plan a whole trip around: if your dates include a first Friday, you have it. It is comfortably among the best free things to do in town.
Frequently asked questions
When does George Streetfest happen?
The first Friday of the month, in the evening. It runs through most of the year rather than only in summer, which makes it the most reliably catchable event on the local calendar — any visit that includes a first Friday includes this.
Does it cost anything?
No. Walking in, the live concert, and the street itself are all free. You only spend money if you buy from a vendor or a food truck.
How long has it been running?
Since June 2015. It was created by Emceesquare Media and approved by the St. George City Council as a new monthly event — it is a recent invention rather than an old civic tradition, which is why it feels more like a recurring venue than a heritage festival.
Is it good for children?
Yes, particularly earlier in the evening. There is a kids' zone, and the whole thing is outdoors on a closed street. It gets denser and louder as the night goes on, so families generally do better arriving at the start than at the end.
Should I bring cash?
Some, yes. Most vendors take cards, but the smaller maker tables are the ones most likely to be cash-only, and they are usually the reason people come.
How does parking work when Main Street is closed?
Two or three streets back from the closure, then walk in. The blocks immediately around the festival fill early and the closed section is obviously unavailable, so circling for something nearer costs more time than the walk does. The historic core is compact enough that nowhere you can park is far.
