A First for the West
The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) brings its first-ever Western Regional to St. George on November 14-15, 2026, three weeks after the state championship on the same course. NICA is the nonprofit that runs interscholastic mountain biking leagues for middle and high school students across the country, and it started running these multi-league Regional gatherings in 2023, when the inaugural Eastern Regional pulled 11 leagues together in Elkton, Maryland. A Regional is not simply a bigger version of a normal weekend of league racing: it's a festival built to unite an entire geographic swath of NICA's leagues in one place for a single weekend, with the racing sitting alongside adventure rides and a partner expo for the whole scene, racers and non-racers alike. Ten Leagues, One Course
Ten NICA leagues from across the western United States are entered: Arizona, Golden State South, Idaho, Montana, Nevada North, Nevada South, New Mexico, NorCal, Oregon, and Utah. Any high school rider registered with one of those ten leagues can start; there's no qualifying result to reach beforehand, which is why a single weekend here can outdraw what any one league's home field usually sees.
Saturday and Sunday
The weekend splits by division rather than by league. JV2 and JV3 riders race Saturday; JV1 and Varsity riders race Sunday, the two divisions that carry the most experienced field. NICA calls the weekend its biggest race event of the season, and the format matches the one used at the organization's other Regionals around the country: two days of racing bracketed by the expo, clinics, and rides that fill out the rest of the festival.
Parking and What to Bring
Desert Color Trail Park sits at the edge of the Desert Color community. It is a bring-your-own venue, so pack water for the day. What separates a November weekend here from the October state championship is the temperature swing rather than the heat: the start line can be cold enough for gloves and a jacket while the afternoon waves race in short sleeves, so anyone who dresses for the forecast high spends the first hours of the day shivering on an exposed course with no shade to sit in. Where It Sits on the Calendar
Registration for Western Regionals opens September 1, 2026, with Utah league registration following on September 13. By mid-November, snow has already closed trail systems at the higher elevations several of these leagues call home, including parts of Idaho, Montana, and Oregon, while Desert Color's low-desert terrain keeps riding season going. That gap is a large part of why a brand-new fixture landed here rather than closer to the geographic center of NICA's western footprint, where a mid-November weekend outdoors is a harder sell. Frequently asked questions
How is the Western Regional different from the state championship held at the same venue three weeks earlier?
The state championship draws Utah's single-state field through that league's own season standings. Western Regionals pools registered riders from all ten western leagues onto the same course in the same fall, which is by design the larger of the two events held at Desert Color that year.
How many riders should I expect at Western Regionals?
NICA has not published a target field for the first Western Regional. For scale, the format's debut in the East in 2023 drew nearly 700 racers from 11 leagues to a single weekend, a rough sense of what ten western leagues converging on one course could look like.
Is there a fee to watch?
Spectating carries no admission charge. NICA's rider registration, which opens September 1, 2026, covers racers only, not the people cheering from the course.
Can spectators camp at the trail park?
No. NICA's lodging information for the weekend points visiting families toward nearby hotels and RV spots rather than the venue itself, which has no camping facilities.
Does everyone at the event race, or can non-competitive kids ride too?
Race day is not the whole weekend. NICA runs GRiT rides open to all female-identifying athletes and coaches and separate adventure rides open to any registered NICA rider regardless of age, alongside a partner expo that doesn't require a race number to attend.
Can spectators ride the course themselves that weekend?
Not while racing is underway; the loop is a competition venue for the two days of the event. Desert Color Trail Park is a public, year-round trail system the rest of the time.
