First-Time Visitor's Guide to St. George

Where you are

St. George sits in the far southwest corner of Utah, in a pocket of low red-rock desert locals call Utah's Dixie. It's the gateway to Zion National Park (about an hour east), fifteen minutes from Snow Canyon State Park, and roughly two hours from Las Vegas — which is where most fly-in visitors land. The landscape is the draw: red and white sandstone, black lava rock, and big open sky.

When to come

Spring and fall are ideal — mild, sunny, perfect for hiking, golf, and being outside all day. Summer is hot, regularly topping 100°F from June into September; it's still a great time to visit if you start early, chase shade, and get on the water. Winters are mild, with cool, clear days that make St. George a popular escape from colder places and a year-round golf destination.

How to spend your first days

• Start with the red rock. Snow Canyon is the easy, close introduction; from there, Zion is a day trip.

• Get on the water in the warm months — the reservoirs around town are made for it.
• Eat and wander downtown. See where to eat, catch the Saturday farmers market, and end the day at one of the best sunset spots.
