How to Golf St. George Without Blowing Your Budget

Black Desert put St. George on the golf map and prices followed. Here is how locals play the best courses without spending resort money every round.

St. George has turned into a real golf destination — Black Desert brought a PGA Tour stop to town — and green fees have followed. But you don't have to drop a fortune per round to have a great trip. Here's how locals actually play it.

Play the city courses

St. George owns four municipal courses, and they're the value play, full stop. Sunbrook is the pick of them — 27 holes, and the Black Rock nine is genuinely pretty. Southgate and St. George Golf Club are easy walks and cheap. Dixie Red Hills is only nine holes but it's a quick, fun loop with red-rock all around you. Any of these runs a fraction of resort pricing.

Splurge once, and spend it right

If you're going to open the wallet, open it for Sand Hollow. The Championship course out in Hurricane is the one people fly in for — red cliffs, slickrock, the works. Black Desert is the shiny new showpiece if you can land a tee time. Entrada is stunning but private, so you'll need a member or a stay at the Inn at Entrada to see it.

Time it right

Nobody sane plays midday in July. Grab the first tee times of the morning in summer, or come in spring and fall when the weather's perfect and afternoon rates are still on the table. Twilight rates after 2 or 3 p.m. are the local move even in shoulder season.

One last thing: if you're here a few days, ask about stay-and-play packages through the resorts and the city system. They bundle rounds a good bit cheaper than booking them one at a time.
