Art of Utah and the West

The St. George Art Museum collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits art and artifacts from Utah and the American West. It is run by the City of St. George, and it programs a rotation of temporary exhibitions alongside works drawn from its own collection — solo shows by regional artists through to mid-career retrospectives.

Why a regional collection matters

Utah has a distinct art history that is easy to miss from outside it. Nineteenth-century painters were sent to record the territory's landscape, some of them commissioned by the church, and their work shaped how the wider country first pictured southern Utah — well before photography of the canyons became common. That tradition of landscape work continues locally, which is why a regional museum here holds material a larger institution would not.

Rotating exhibitions do something a permanent hang cannot: they let a small museum show far more of its collection over time, and they give living regional artists somewhere to exhibit at a serious scale without leaving the state.

Visiting

The museum is at 47 East 200 North in downtown St. George, within walking distance of the Tabernacle, Town Square and the rest of the historic core. Admission is free and donations are welcomed, which makes it an easy stop to combine with a walk around downtown. Check current opening days before traveling, as they vary by season.
