Kanab: Slot Canyons and 'Little Hollywood'
A laid-back red-rock basecamp about an hour east of St. George — Peekaboo slot, Belly of the Dragon, the lottery-only Wave, and old Western movie sets.
Kanab: Slot Canyons and 'Little Hollywood'
About an hour to 90 minutes east of St. George, Kanab is a laid-back basecamp for red-rock adventure — nicknamed 'Little Hollywood' for the many Westerns filmed nearby.
What to do
- Peekaboo (Red Canyon) slot: a short, gorgeous slot canyon north of town (the access road is sandy — 4WD or a guided tour)
- Belly of the Dragon: an easy, kid-friendly tunnel-like walk
- The Wave (Coyote Buttes North): the world-famous swirled sandstone — access is by BLM lottery only
- Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and the old movie sets around town
Know before you go
- Popular slots and The Wave have permits or lotteries — plan ahead; many visitors book guided tours
- Summer is hot and slot canyons carry flash-flood risk — check the weather
- Kanab has good food and lodging, making it an easy overnight
Tips: Kanab pairs well with Zion's east side (they're on the same highway) or a Page trip. Great for travelers who want slot canyons without a lottery-only hike.
