Living in Kayenta

Kayenta is unlike any other community in the St. George area. Set in the red-rock desert of Ivins, Utah, near Snow Canyon State Park and Red Mountain about seven miles west of St. George, it was founded by architect-developer Terry Marten on a simple idea: homes should blend into the desert rather than dominate it. The name is Navajo, commonly translated as "water from the rock," and the community was explicitly modeled on California's Sea Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe.

That vision is enforced through strict design covenants: low-profile structures that protect the vistas, natural materials and earth-tone colors that blend with the landscape, shielded lighting that preserves the night sky, and preservation of the native desert landscaping — no manicured lawns. The result is custom desert-contemporary architecture on large lots, with more than 80% of the community's borders backing up to open space. Kayenta is all-ages, residential-only, and — unlike most upscale communities in the region — not a golf community.

The Kayenta Art Village

Kayenta's signature feature is the Kayenta Art Village, a public arts district within the community. It includes a cluster of galleries (Datura Gallery, Gallery 873, Juniper Sky Fine Art, and others), the Center for the Arts at Kayenta — a performing-arts venue hosting 50-plus events a year, from dance and theater to festivals — and Xetava Gardens Cafe, serving southwestern cuisine on a canopied patio. A desert arboretum and the eleven-circuit Desert Rose Labyrinth round out the village.
