Living in Southgate

Southgate is an established golf-course community in southwest St. George, clustered around the city-owned Southgate Golf Club near Dixie Drive and Tonaquint Drive, along the Santa Clara River at the foot of Tonaquint Mountain. Rather than one master-planned development, Southgate is a set of subdivisions built up around a municipal golf course, including The Legacy at Southgate, a 55+ active-adult planned community. The broader neighborhood is all-ages, quiet, and known for mountain and golf-course views.

The golf course

Southgate Golf Club is a public course owned and operated by the City of St. George — one of the city's four municipal courses and among its oldest. Designed by John V. Lagant, it's an 18-hole, par-70 layout that plays around 5,900 yards: a shorter, walkable, player-friendly course rather than a championship test. Its defining feature is the Santa Clara River setting — most of the front nine holes carry water features, and the front nine was entirely rebuilt after the 2005 Santa Clara River flood, while the back nine climbs the Tonaquint foothills for red-rock and downtown views. On-site are a game-improvement center with PGA instruction, a driving range, and a café.
