History & heritage
Washington was settled in 1857 by Latter-day Saint families sent by Brigham Young as part of the Cotton Mission to grow cotton in the warm Virgin River basin — part of the reason for the area's "Utah's Dixie" nickname. The settlement's landmark is the Washington Cotton Factory, a red-sandstone mill built on Mill Creek in 1865–67; expanded to three stories by 1870, it was described as the largest factory west of the Mississippi, operated until 1898, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 (restored beginning in the 1980s). The historic Washington School, now a museum, and the natural Elephant Arch are other local landmarks, and repeated flooding of the settlers' dams was finally tamed by the Washington Fields Dam in 1891.
